A Spring Rendezvous: The Romantic Prelude on Harajuku's Corner
When the spring breeze sweeps across the corners of Harajuku, Tokyo, amid the bustling traffic of the Meiji-Jingumae Intersection, the romance of White Valentine's has long been quietly brewing. As the core landmark of Tokyo's trend culture, this place is never short of fresh surprises. Every novel idea can quickly turn into a viral topic across social media, where countless youngsters chase their own trends and romances. Checking in on new installations and sharing limited-edition romance has become part of their daily life. And this time, we brought a gentle, cross-ocean rendezvous, for the global art toy brand POP MART.
To align with the launch of the「Twinkle Twinkle Crush on You」collection, the brand hoped to craft a touchable romance for all, in this youth-driven vibrant neighborhood — to scale the palm-sized art toy into a gentle installation that could embrace the entire city. It was the first time that this "little star child" inspired IP had landed on Japan's streets in such a grand form, allowing this heartbeat to travel further through youngsters' lenses, and become the most extraordinary social topic of this White Valentine's.
Within Every Tiny Detail: The Meticulous Restoration of the IP Image
Scaling a few-centimeter art toy into a 5-meter giant inflatable installation, the greatest challenge was never the size expansion, but the restoration of tiny details. The charm of art toys lies in those subtle, warm little details; lose these after scaling up, and the entire image would lose its original soul.
We polished and refined the IP design draft over and over again, spending an entire week just adjusting the detail restoration plan: that perfect blush on the cheek, we needed to restore that shy, transparent gradient, avoiding any stiffness brought by scaling. We adopted layered printing technology, to make the color transition perfectly identical to the original art toy. For the hand-drawn style heart graffiti on the chest, we needed to retain that casual brushstroke texture. Instead of conventional full printing, we specially simulated the edges of hand-painted strokes, so that the scaled-up pattern still carried that casual, warm hand-drawn feel, rather than rigid industrial printing. Even for the transparency of the lollipop in his hand, we made 3 prototypes back and forth. Among PVC fabrics of different light transmittance, we picked the semi-transparent material that could present a crystal texture in the daytime, while allowing warm light to gently filter through at night. We also did layered processing for the lollipop's gradient color, to ensure it perfectly matched the IP design from far to near, restoring that crystal texture from the original art toy.
From fabric selection to the inflatable's structural design, we balanced visual restoration and practicality for on-site deployment. The rooftop venue needed to withstand the spring breeze, so we added invisible reinforcement to the structure, while ensuring the inflated outline perfectly matched the IP's soft, cute vibe, without turning stiff due to the reinforcement. This little star child, crossed the boundary of size, and stood vividly on the rooftop of Tokyo.
Romance for Day & Night: The Dual Charms From Clear Skies to Nightfall
This 5-meter little guy was never a monotonous installation. He was a dual romance that fit both day and night, whether it was the clear sky of the day, or the city lights of the night, he could perfectly blend in, becoming the most extraordinary scenery in the neighborhood.
In the daytime, the clear sky set the perfect backdrop for him. His soft, fluffy outline became the most healing coordinate amid the city's reinforced concrete. Passing youngsters couldn't help but stop to take photos with this cute giant, storing the spring cuteness into their albums. He was just like a little guest from the sky, using his innocence to soften the entire streets of Harajuku. Even hurried passers-by, the moment they saw him, couldn't help but break into a smile.
And when dusk fell, his highlight moment truly arrived. To ensure the night lights wouldn't be too harsh, while still highlighting the inflatable's outline, we specially adjusted the light's brightness and color temperature, picking 3000K warm yellow light, which perfectly blended with Harajuku's night view, without ruining the neighborhood's vibe, instead becoming a gentle ornament in the dark. As per the event plan, from 17:00 to 23:00 every day, the built-in warm light of the inflatable would slowly light up, the warm yellow halo spreading from the fabric, wrapping the entire rooftop in a gentle atmosphere. At this moment, he became the brightest little starlight under Harajuku's night sky, echoing the distant city lights, and turning into a romantic landmark that countless people traveled to visit. Many people specially waited for the lighting moment, just to take an exclusive photo with this gentle night charm. During the event, this little guy became a viral check-in spot on Xiaohongshu and Instagram in Tokyo. Many people traveled all the way to Harajuku's rooftop just for him, sharing this romance on their social media. In just two weeks, there were over a thousand related check-in posts, making it the hottest romantic topic in Tokyo for this White Valentine's.
Two-Way Devotion: The Maiden's Secret Hidden in the Bow
Besides the little boy holding the lollipop, we also crafted another inflatable inspired by「I Hear You」for the brand, to interpret this two-way devotion of love, making this romance no longer a one-way crush, but two souls drawing close to each other.
This agile maiden figure, with a plaid bow, had two soft little twin messengers snuggling by her side. For those two little messengers, we also did the same detail restoration as the main figure: their cheek blush, tiny heart decorations, all kept the consistent style with the big image, making the entire inflatable's layering richer. It was just like moving the entire little scene from the art toy into reality, hiding the maiden's little secrets into all the gentle details. We designed a more agile structure for her, making her posture lighter, as if she was tiptoeing, sharing the little secret hidden in her heart with you. Even from afar, you could feel that maiden's softness and heartbeat.
Her presence added a two-way meaning to the entire pop-up event's romance — love is never a one-way journey, but two people drawing close to each other. Just like these two inflatables, standing together on the rooftop, passing the "Crush on You" heartbeat to every passer-by. This agile maiden figure also became many girls' favorite check-in spot. Her soft posture perfectly fit the romantic vibe of maiden's secrets on White Valentine's. Many couples took couple photos here, storing this two-way romance into their memories, making it the most touching confession of this spring.
Across Mountains & Seas: Our End-to-End Capability for Global Deployment
We always believe that a great inflatable is never just an inflatable installation, but a medium for brands to communicate with cities, a carrier that delivers romance and surprises to every corner of the world.
This time, from our design workshop in China, to the rooftop deployment in Tokyo, we completed a full-cycle overseas custom project: from the early-stage IP restoration design, to fabric and structure debugging in the production phase, to overseas transportation and installation, we took full control of the entire process. For overseas projects, we provide end-to-end support: from transportation packaging optimization, using shockproof custom packaging to ensure the inflatable won't be damaged during long-distance shipping, to full documentation support for overseas customs clearance, helping the brand finish clearance quickly, to on-site installation guidance. We provide detailed installation manuals and remote guidance, so even local teams can finish the inflatable setup within 2 hours, no extra hassle for the brand. We turned the brand's creativity, without any loss, into a physical romance that can cross mountains and seas.
We have served numerous overseas brands, familiar with the venue requirements and safety standards of different countries, and can help you avoid all the pitfalls of overseas deployment.
